China’s tourism industry achieved rapid development in 2014. Domestic tourism maintained fast growth, inbound tourism made steady progress, and outbound tourism grew rapidly. The number of domestic tourists reached 3.611 billion, bringing in revenue of RMB3.03 trillion, an increase of 10.7% and 15.4% year on year; the number of inbound tourists increased to 128 million and revenue from international tourism totalled USD105.38 billion; 107 million Chinese people travelled overseas, who spent USD89.64 billion in total. In the year, China registered total tourism revenue of RMB3.73 trillion. The tourism industry contributed RMB6.61 trillion to national GDP, accounting for 10.39% of GDP. 27.794 million people were directly employed by the tourism industry, and 78.73 million worked in the industry directly or indirectly, accounting for 10.19% of China’s working population.
I. Domestic Tourism
——The number of domestic tourists reached 3.611 billion, up 10.7% year on year, of whom 2.483 billion were urban residents and 1.128 billion were rural residents.
——Revenue from domestic tourism totalled RMB3, 031.187 billion, up 15.4% year on year, of which urban residents spent RMB2, 421.976 billion and rural residents RMB609.211 billion.
——Per capita expenses of domestic tourists were RMB839.7, of which urban residents spent RMB975.4 per capita and rural residents RMB540.2.
——A total of 706 million domestic visits were made during the Spring Festival holiday and National Holiday, bringing in revenue of RMB371.69 billion.
II. Inbound Tourism
——The number of inbound tourists reached 128.4983 million, including 25.985 million foreign visitors,76.1317 million visitors from Hong Kong, 20.6399 million from Macau, and 5.3659 million from Taiwan.

III. Outbound Tourism

IV. Scale and Performance of Travel Agencies
——By the end of 2014, China had 26,650 travel agencies, an increase of 2.3% year on year.
——By the end of 2014, travel agencies in China had total assets of RMB129.297 billion, an increase of 24.4% over the previous year; registered total revenue of RMB402.959 billion, an increase of 12.0%, and paid business tax and surcharges of RMB1.66 billion, up 11.3%.
——In the year, Chinese travel agencies helped to attract 14.1004 million inbound tourists who stayed a total of 61.6594 million days in China, down 2.6% and up 1.7% year on year; 20.0256 million inbound tourists were received by travel agencies, who stayed 68.5515 million days in China, down 2.2% and up 2.8 % respectively.
——Chinese travel agencies organized 131.1666 million domestic overnight visits lasting 415.4583 million days in total, up 2.0% and 1.7% year on year; and received 144.5777 million domestic overnight visitors for a total of 349.7844 million days, down 0.4% and up 3.4% respectively.
V. Scale and Performance of Star-rated Hotels
By the end of 2014, China had 12,803 star-rated hotels that were included in the national star-rated hotels statistics and management system, of which 11,180 hotels had submitted their 2014 statements of financial position and passed review of provincial tourism authorities. Financial data of the 11,180 star-rated hotels show that:
——They had 1.4979 million guest rooms and 2.6248 million beds in total, with fixed assets of RMB500.948 billion; registered business revenue of RMB215.145 billion; paid business tax of RMB1.2529 billion; and had an average occupancy rate of 54.2%.
——Among them, there were 745 five-star hotels, 2,372 four-star hotels, 5,406 three-star hotels, 2,557 two-star hotels, and 99 one-star hotels.
——The 3,057 state-owned star-rated hotels posted business revenue of RMB65.183 billion and paid business tax of RMB3.553 billion.
——The 442 star-rated hotels with foreign investments and investments from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan registered business revenue of RMB29.008 billion and paid business tax of RMB1.668 billion.
VI. Tourism Education and Training
——By the end of 2014, China had 1,122 higher tourism education institutions and general higher education institutions with tourism departments/majors, an increase of 163 over the previous year, and they had 435,200 million students in total, a decrease of 59,100; there were 933 secondary tourism schools with a total of 318,100 students, an increase of 60 and 40,900 respectively. Together, there were 2,055 institutions that provided higher and secondary tourism education for 753,300 students.
——In 2014, 4.6213 million people working in the tourism industry received on-the-job training, an increase of 348,830, or 8.2%, over the previous year.
