China’s tourism industry registered steady and comparatively fast growth in 2015. Domestic tourism continued to growth rapidly, and inbound tourism rebounded, though outbound tourism slowed down a little bit. The number of domestic tourists reached 4 billon, bringing in revenue of about RMB3.42 trillion, an increase of 10.5% and 13.0% year on year; the number of inbound tourists climbed to 134 million and revenue from international tourism totalled USD113.65 billion, up 4.1% and 7.8% over the previous year; the number of Chinese outbound tourists hit 117 million, who spent USD104.5 billion abroad, up 9.0% and 16.6% respectively. In the year, China posted total tourism revenue of RMB4.13 trillion, an 11% year-on-year increase. ——By the end of 2015, China had 27,621 travel agencies, an increase of 3.6% year on year.
——By the end of 2015, travel agencies in China had total assets of RMB134.3 billion, up 2.5% over the previous year; registered total revenue of RMB418.9 billion, an increase of 4.0%, and paid business tax and surcharges of RMB1.61 billion, down 2.9%.
——In the year, Chinese travel agencies helped to attract 14.163 million inbound tourists who stayed a total of 60.233 million days in China, up 0.4% and down 2.3% year on year; 19.788 million inbound tourists were received by travel agencies, who stayed 65.344 million days in China, down 1.2% and 4.7% respectively.
——Chinese travel agencies organized 136.761 million domestic overnight visits lasting 435.963 million days in total, up 4.3% and 4.9% year on year; and received 153.355 million domestic overnight visitors for a total of 378.724 million days, up 6.1% and 8.3% respectively.
V. Scale and Performance of Star-rated Hotels
By the end of 2015, China had 12,327 star-rated hotels that were included in the national star-rated hotels statistics and management system, of which 10,550 hotels had submitted their 2015 statements of financial position and passed review of provincial tourism authorities. Financial data of the 10,550 star-rated hotels show that:
——They had 1.463 million guest rooms and 2.594 million beds in total, with fixed assets of RMB546.3 billion; registered business revenue of RMB210.68 billion; paid business tax of RMB13.65 billion; and had an average occupancy rate of 54.2%.
——Among them, there were 789 five-star hotels, 2,375 four-star hotels, 5,098 three-star hotels, 2,197 two-star hotels, and 91 one-star hotels.
——The 2,426 state-owned star-rated hotels posted business revenue of RMB50.34 billion and paid business tax of RMB2.74 billion.
——The 383 star-rated hotels with foreign investments and investments from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan registered business revenue of RMB20.31 billion and paid business tax of RMB1.13 billion.
VI. Tourism Education and Training
——By the end of 2015, China had 1,518 higher tourism education institutions and general higher education institutions with tourism departments/majors, an increase of 396 over the previous year, and they had 571,000 million students in total, an increase of 136,000; there were 789 secondary tourism schools with a total of 226,000 students, down 144 and 92,000 respectively. Together, there were 2,307 institutions that provided higher and secondary tourism education for 797,000 students.
——In 2015, 4.754 million people working in the tourism industry received on-the-job training, an increase of 133,000, or 2.9%, over the previous year.
